The Zendrum laptop is one weird looking drum triggering midi controller. This is not your Akai MPC drum pad replicator. The Zendrum actually look like something that Captain Kirk made beats with on the Starship Enterprise. Looking at it, it makes you want to say “beam me up Scottie!”.If you haven’t seen one you can check it out at www.zendrum.com.
What started out as an idea in the 80’s took shape in the early 90’s. The Zendrum creator, David Haney went to a Bela and the Flecktones concert were he saw Roy Wooten the “Future Man” playing his electronic drum device, the Drumitar. He was amazed at how well Roy Wooten was playing the device that his inspiration was born. He developed the prototype and the rest it history. While the original Zendrum is played like a guitar, the new laptop sits on a flat surface, stand, strap etc… It was originally design to be used in a wheelchair. I’d like to applaud the Zendrum Corporation for their gestures of humanity.
The Zendrum laptop crafted in solid rock maple and exotic hardwoods has 24 velocity-sensitive, shock mounted triggers. If Roy Wooten thinks the velocity on the drum triggers are nice then they must be.I can’t really explain it to you but those that know how to get around the Zendrum create some serious rhythms. Think about it on the drum its four parts connecting with your drum set. With the Zendrum you can connect with as many as your hands can hit for some real complex beats. All of us have slap a beat or two in our day. This makes drumming as easy as fingertapping. Go to the site and check out the awesome videos and you will see just what I mean.
